| CRUTEMOBILE, OR, JESUS CRUSHED MY CAR
July, 1978: Happy birthday to me. |
My first car was a 1976 Ford Pinto Runabout, with a hatchback. I drove it for 11 years and 175,000 miles. Being a filmmaker, I documented everything. And when the engine blew up in 1989, signaling the death of the car, I made a film about it. My talented pal Glen Kinion helped me shoot the standups ("we pulled over right here") and together we edited the thing. We even composed and performed the memorable theme song. Total budget was around $200. Really, we weren't hardly trying on this one. Naturally it was a huge success. By our standards, anyway. "Crutemobile" was acquired by the documentary series "P.O.V." and saw national broadcasts on PBS. It played in film festivals. And based on this piece, we were awarded a $7000 grant from the Marin Arts Council. That money was the first chunk of the budget for our feature, Breakfast With The Colonel. And recently, it made the top 50 finalists in a competition at TriggerStreet.com. So there. WATCH "CRUTEMOBILE!" |
